Braga & Ponte de Lima

The Sacred & Savoury Minho

Faith and a Bountiful Table

If we were asked to describe Minho in two words, religion and gastronomy would probably be the ones that would, without hesitation, come to mind. Known as Portugal’s religious capital, Braga was already home to an active Christian community in the 3rd century. Later, in 561, it became the seat of one of the oldest archbishoprics in the Iberian Peninsula, helping fill the city with religious buildings. Braga’s historic centre alone has more than 30 churches, and three of them are among the most important religious landmarks in Portugal: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro, Braga Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, whose monumental staircase has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.

Pilgrimages and Communion

Around these places of worship, pilgrimages and processions, local romarias and liturgical festivities developed, often ending around a table, in communion. A meal was needed that could nourish the body, but also the soul, while being generous enough to feed large groups of diners.

It is in this context that Minho gastronomy asserts itself: a symbol of sharing and made for many, where slowly cooked meat melts in the mouth, cured sausages carry the flavour of generations of know-how, and rice reigns at the table.

What you’ll live

  • Guided visit to the Bom Jesus Sanctuary
  • Guided visit to Braga Cathedral and walk through the historic centre
  • Traditional lunch
  • Guided walk through Ponte de Lima: Main Church and medieval bridge

We begin this tour with a guided visit to Bom Jesus do Monte, where the ascent to the sanctuary is made on what was the first funicular built in the Iberian Peninsula, and which remains the only one in the world to use a water counterbalance system. After a short drive to the centre of Braga, we continue with a guided visit to Braga Cathedral.

We then head to Ponte de Lima, where tradition continues at the table. In a setting marked by authenticity and the passing of time, lunch is served as a reflection of the essence of Minho cuisine — robust, generous and deeply rooted in local culture.

We end with a guided visit through the historic centre of Ponte de Lima, including the town’s Main Church and medieval bridge.
